Health Insurance Options For You

Living without health insurance will catch up to you someday. If you do not have health insurance and a member family becomes very ill, needing hospitalization or several prescription medications, how long will it take to exhaust your savings with all of those medical expenses?

You should buy as much health insurance as can be afforded reasonably, that is the clear and simple fact. Unfortunately, there are no other facts about health insurance that are so clear or simple. Medical expenses cost more every day. Employers may be asking you to pay more for their portion of the company health insurance, and insurance companies want you to use their preferred providers to keep costs down.

You may find that you can choose from several kinds of coverage. Before making the choice, you should study the plans and see which is actually best for you.

Fee for service insurance allows you to choose your own doctor. The plan will pay either all or part of the bill.

In a HMO, you pay a monthly fee and can go to the doctor as needed with no or very little deductible. Unfortunately, if you see a doctor that is not a part of the HMO, you will end up paying your own bill.

Preferred provider insurance plans let you choose your doctor from a list of doctors that have contracted with the company. In the contract, the provider agrees to charge a reduced rate for services provided. In small communities, doctors often sign contracts with nearly all available insurance companies, so your current doctor may be in-network. If you do go out of network doctors, you will pay more of the bill.

COBRA may allow you to continue your insurance from a former job for a limited time. You will be responsible to pay the insurance premium.
